Magdalena Abakanowicz

Biography
Magdalena Abakanowicz was a contemporary Polish artist known for her textile sculptures of biomorphic forms. Her notable works involve serial human figures composed of sewn sackcloth and synthetic resins. The sense of uniformity in her works evoke the loss of identity in the face of an overwhelming cultural collective—a reference to her time spent living under a Communist regime.

"Agora" 106 iron cast figures, each about 9 feet tall, shell like, frozen in walking movement. They are permanently displayed in Chicago Grant Park along the Michigan Av. and Roosevelt Rd. The figures are similar in general shape, but different in details. Models for each figure were made by hand, by myself and my three assistants. The surfaces of figures are like a tree bark or wrinkled face expressing a different individuality of each sculpture. The figures were cast during two years 2004-2006 in the huge industrial foundry in Srem near city of Poznan (Poland). Then transported to USA. The installation took place in October /November 2006.

Both Gothic art and architecture spread throughout Western Europe The hallmarks of Gothic art include such forms as sculpture, paintings (on panels), stained glass, and illuminated manuscripts. Fresco was also an important media for Gothic artists.  The subjects of Gothic art were often religious in nature, but the period also marks an interest in secular art. As literacy rates improved and more and more people could patronize the arts, additional subject matter came to light. Scenes often, however, depicted narratives of Biblical stories. The Madonna, a less iconic and more human woman, figured strongly into Gothic art. Religious subject matter covered churches and cathedrals and was also expressed in metalwork and tapestry.
